In our line of work, we hear that some drivers avoid visiting us because of a fear of car washes, often triggered by claustrophobia (a fear of confined or small spaces). Surprisingly, about 12.5% of the population has claustrophobia. 

Why are people scared of car washes? 

Car washes of the past can be triggering. They are from a different era, with old methods. 

Line your tire up just right. Drive into a dark, dingy, black hole of a building. Cement cinderblock design. Low ceilings. No windows. A chain-and-roller system that locks your wheel into the track.  

Being stuck inside the wash, with loud noises and a dark environment, is not ideal. Especially if you deal with claustrophobia. 

And car washes weren’t initially designed for customers to enjoy going through them. They were often a side function of auto body shops, made convenient for owners.

Taking care of your pet is just like taking care of your car – you always want to make sure it’s clean and comfortable. 

We want that, too.  

But for now, you’ll have to keep your pet-friendly sudsy fun safe at home. The more bubbles, the better! 

We’re big pet lovers, but our washes are just for cars.

An exterior dog wash at a car wash location is a convenient do-it-yourself alternative to taking furry family members to the groomers.

Tunnel of Terror® at Tommy’s Express is a Halloween event you don’t want to miss. 

In 2022, nearly 60 Tommy’s Express sites hosted Tunnel of Terror. 2023 will be our first year with over 100 sites participating. 

If you love Halloween, a good scare, and a clean car, here’s an event you should put on your list.

What is Tunnel of Terror?

Throughout October, Tommy’s Express locations all over the country turn bright and inviting tunnels into a scary, frightening, haunted car wash experience.  

You will recognize the same great wash quality the Works package always brings. After that, things get a bit removed from the normal Tommy’s Express experience… 

A stormy ambiance surrounds the dimly lit, multicolored glow of the wash. Ominous music echoes in the distance, reverberating between spiderwebs, skeletons, and ghouls. 

Disguised team members prowl inside and outside the wash menacingly, waiting for their next unsuspecting victim to scare… 

Imagine all the fun and fright of a haunted house enjoyed from the comfort of your vehicle, plus a clean car at the end.  

It’s a great way to get in the Halloween spirit without the cold, crowded haunted house. You don’t leave with sore feet, either. You stay in your vehicle, and we do the rest.  

Naturally, an event this spectacular draws intrigue. Below are answers to a few common questions about Tunnel of Terror. 

Is Tunnel of Terror family-friendly?

While Tommy’s Express is normally inviting and fun for people of all ages, Tunnel of Terror may not be suitable for young children or those who are scared easily.  

Jump scares by dressed-up team members, a dark tunnel, and spooky music work together and create a wonderfully scary ride through our wash.  

Some sites may be more kid-friendly than others, so we ask that you use your best judgment when deciding to bring your children to this haunted car wash event.

Do I need tickets? 

There is no registration or tickets required to participate. Visit the Tunnel of Terror page to find your nearest participating location and hours.  

These events are popular, and you may be in line for some time before you enter the wash. But fear not; we have ways of ensuring the scares start long before the tunnel! 

When is Tunnel of Terror this year? 

Tunnel of Terror will be held on various days and times from mid-October to Halloween.  

Times for the events also vary. During the event, members will not be able to wash “normally” without the full Tunnel of Terror experience. Check the Tunnel of Terror page for details for each site regarding date and time.

A bit about me…

I have three kids. Two school-aged, one just about ready to pack up for college. And I really try to look for the positives in life, even when things are a little bit crazy and even when things are hard.

But, as I’m writing this, looking outside at the dark-green maple tree in my front yard, I know that it’s going to start turning gold for autumn soon, and I know I have to get my back-to-school checklists updated and a packing list for college too.

And you know what? I am STOKED!

Believe it or not, it was an incredibly rough school year last year. Parents, you know what I mean.

Whether your kids were in-person, remote, asynchronous, or even 100% homeschooled during the 2020-21 school year, it was a disruptive, stretching, character-building time for all of us. And after a long summer of making up for some of that lost time, I’m just looking forward to getting back to some normalcy.

And that’s why I’m so thankful for Tommy’s Express.

Why?

My youngest still loves car washes. Something about them (and Tommy’s Express in particular!) just seems to click with him. And while the other two kids were mostly ok with switching between online and in-person classes, it was rough on him.

With our TommyClub membership, regular trips to Tommy’s Express to get the car cleaned up became a family ritual for us last year, one that I kept going through the summer. She joked we’d have to add her car to our TommyClub membership when she comes back next summer. I joked that she’d better get a job and get her own.

Really what I’m trying to say, I think, is that I’m thankful for having Tommy’s Express around, I’m thankful it kept running through the pandemic, and I’m thankful to see them giving back to the local community more and more as things open back up.

Every spring, our communities nationwide face a fresh wave of springtime bugs smeared all over our cars. Whether you’re up against Florida Lovebugs or your neighborhood moths and mosquitos, Tommy’s Express is here to help you clean bugs off your car. 

So, what’s the problem with bug splats anyway? 

Bug splats will eat at your car’s paint 

It turns out that liquified insects and the bacteria that try to decompose them are quite acidic. This means that over time, bug splats will begin to chemically cut into your car’s clearcoat, dulling your car’s appearance and putting your paint job at risk. 

Bug splatter messes with your vision 

When you’re behind the wheel, anything that gets in the way or increases the risk of an accident is a problem. 

Bug guts can obscure your vision, diffusing light across your windshield at night. 

They can also smear when you turn your windshield wipers on in the rain or build up, becoming a distraction. 

Keeping it clean with science 

Unfortunately, bug splats are hard to wipe away, even relatively fresh. As a natural, organic material, bug guts are naturally oily and sticky and won’t easily mix with water. Even high-quality automotive soap might not cut it without some elbow grease. 

If they bake on your windshield or hood in the sun and harden up, they can be even harder to get off. 

Tommy’s Express has you covered with a variety of wash services specifically designed to break down and remove stubborn grime like lovebug splats and other insect splats.

• Presoak treatment: Ever notice that Tommy’s Express doesn’t have a team member spraying down cars before the wash? Our presoak detergent is alkaline-based, and during bug season, we adjust our concentrations to make sure it cuts through layers of bug guts more efficiently, along with other common car soils like road tar, dirt, and dust.
• Friction & pressure: After the presoak, we have stages of high-pressure body soap applications and repeated contact with soft cloth brushes to help agitate, scrub, and lift bug guts away. Because our body soap is mildly acidic, it does a good job getting rid of the bug slime first loosened up by the presoak application.
• Ceramic Body Wax®: One of the best ways to prevent bug splats on your car is to add a protective layer between future splats and your clear coat. We do this with our high-quality Tommy’s Express Ceramic Body Wax® service, which helps give your car extra sheen and, with repeated visits, can build up to provide a slick protective coating that makes removing bug splats noticeably easier in the future.

Please mind the fingernail rule

If you can rub bug guts off with the pad of your finger, our wash will probably be able to get them off as well. And if we don’t completely get rid of loose bug splats on your car, please let our cashiers know so we can send you through the wash again at no charge. 

However, if it is difficult to remove bug splats with your finger, and you need to use a fingernail to chip or scrape it off, then our wash system probably won’t be able to remove it. 

In this case, you can remove dead bugs with a microfiber cloth or other automotive-safe cleaning tools. A variety of specialized bug and tar remover products are on the market. 

You can also try laundry pads, WD-40 (not safe on plastic elements!), and even cola to help break down and loosen stubborn splats.

Take care of your spot cleaning

Tommy’s Express washes work hard to give your car the best possible clean. But we can’t always get everything.

If you can rub grime off with your fingertip, whether it’s dirt, dust, tar, or bug splats, then the wash can probably get it off too. If you need to use your fingernail for scratching it off, then you’ll probably need to spot-clean it off with a vehicle-safe microfiber cloth, sponge, and/or soap.

And, naturally, if you’ve been mudding we’ll ask you to pre-spray your vehicle off at home, so we aren’t flinging mud all across the wash bay!

Hand-clean your mirrors and windows

At Tommy’s Express, our Spot-Free Rinse service uses highly purified water generated from a reverse osmosis system, so we can rinse the exterior of your car with minimal water spotting once it dries.

But if you really want your ride to shine, you’ll want to take a glass cleaner and microfiber cloth and clean off your side-view mirrors and the outside and inside of your windows by hand. This should get rid of any distracting smears or other imperfections, though you should be careful not to get glass cleaner on any other plastic or automotive surfaces.

Restore your headlights

Take a look at your headlights next time you step out to your car. If you’re like most of us, and your car isn’t brand new off the lot, it’s probably gotten pretty cloudy, oxidized, and weathered.

To get your headlights crystal clear and looking like new again, all you need to do is get a quick car wash to clean off the whole area, put painter’s tape around the headlight plastic to protect your car’s finish, and then scrub the clear plastic of the headlight down with regular old toothpaste to polish off the buildup before removing the tape and rinsing clean.

If this procedure doesn’t do the trick or if you have moisture or fogging on the inside of your headlights, we recommend consulting with your local auto detailing company.
